A craftsmanship which still survives today

Les Terres de Lleida still preserve a wide variety of craftsmanship; the numerous professions spread over the different areas have managed to maintain these time-honoured traditions. Visitors will come across craftsmen working with boxwood, bringing to mind the long periods the shepherds used to spend up on the mountains in the old days. The images of the lamb wool spinners and shearers are still alive. Lace makers are to be found in quite a number of places along the route and will display their skill with bobbins.

Basket makers shape wicker and hazel tree twigs. Then there is traditional cheese making, conducted in the majestic setting of a mountain range, which will delight the most demanding palates. The well-known hayforks of Alentorn are still produced using traditional methods. Chair makers have been busy until the present day producing reedmace chairs.

Esparto workers also continue to fashion traditional ribbon shoe wear; mattress makers and harness makers produce their respective goods still applying traditional methods; wineskin makers still shape wineskins to carry wine and oil; nougat makers, blacksmiths, carts makers and cutlers - the latter still shaping horn handles - all still exist in this region. Don't forget to stop at the potters' workshops; they are masters in the art of shaping black clay. Finally, paper also contributes to artistic creation: there is a fashion parade in which the clothes on display are made exclusively of paper.
