PARISH CHURCH OF SANT ESTEVE |
 |
|
 |
Not far from the castle, and high above the town, is the old parish church of Sant Esteve,
a beautiful Romanesque building with a nave and two side aisles and a square bell tower decorated with Lombard arcatures.
Its three apses also feature arcatures. The church was first documented in 1141. A new parish church, dedicated to the
Good Shepherd, has recently been built next to the river Abella where there are many scattered houses. |
A magnificent Gothic altarpiece, the work of Pere Serra and his workshop and which was painted around 1375, is preserved from the old parish church.
In 1929, it was displayed at the International Exhibition and, in 1936, was taken to the Santa Maria hospital
church in Lleida to prevent it from being destroyed. The altarpiece was stolen in 1972 and taken abroad, but was
recovered thanks to the efforts of people connected with the museums of Barcelona. Once this informtaion was published
in the press, the altarpiece and the issue of conserving works of art became very popular. The altarpiece, now in the
Museu Diocesà d'Urgell, recounts episodes from the life of the Virgin Mary and on the predella or altarpiece
base there are images of a number of saints and details of their attributes. Another 15th century altarpiece is
preserved in the town. This was the work of the school of Pere Garcia de Benavarri and was dedicated to El Roser. In 1977, Josep M. Gavín discovered
the Romanesque church of Santa Cauberola near the town. |
