The parish church of Santa Maria de Llimiana is Romanesque in style and has a nave and two side aisles, separated by arcades on pilasters. The nave, which is slightly higher, has transverse rib arches which rest on half columns embedded in piers.
The exterior of the church is a little spoilt by some adjoining premises, including the rectory to the east, which almost
completely hides its apses. Like the side walls of the church, these are decorated with lesenes and Lombard arcatures. The
square-plan bell tower adjoins the southern front; its upper part was demolished towards the end of the 19th century. In
1936, a notable carved Romanesque Sant Crist, was lost. Recently, the
church has been refurbished and a small museum with remains of the old Renaissance and Baroque altarpieces and other objects of value have been displayed in
the adjoining buildings. |
