The first document that refers to the Canònica (religious community) de Sant Pere de Ponts date from the year 1024 and the time of Count Ermengol II. It was afforded ecclesiastic recognition in 1091.
Nowadays, all that remains is the Lombard-Romanesque style Church of Sant Pere. This has a single-nave building whose northern part has three apses crowned with a dome and eight-sided tower. In the western facade there is a door with a Roman arch that provides access to the quarters of the religious community. The nave is covered by a half-barrel vault.
In 1931 this was declared a national monument. The looting that this temple has suffered over time finally aroused the conscience of the local population who created the Associació d’Amics de Sant Pere de Ponts (Association of Friends of Saint Peter of Pons), who have managed to restore the building with the help of funding from official institutions.
