MONASTERY OF SANTA MARIA DE GUALTER DE LA BARONIA DE RIALB
Other churches

This former Romanesque-style Benedictine monastery was the most important nucleus in this area at the time of the Christian occupation. From the middle of the 14th century it went into serious decline which resulted in its depopulation, which was particularly severe in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The monastery is currently being restored following its destruction caused by an explosion in the Spanish Civil War. It is now possible to see the perimeter walls around the church, which is a building with three naves, a large central apse and two absidal side chapels. The central nave is covered by a barrel vault.

Next to the church there is part of the original cloister [see photo], with a wooden cover-structure and arches supported on short columns and with capitals showing plant themes. This group of buildings is on the right bank of the river Segre.

To foster the buildings recovery, it now houses the local council and other municipal offices.
