From Torà, just before taking the old road to Solsona, it is necessary to turn off to the right and follow a tarmac track that leads to the monastery of Cellers.
Of the original monastery, all that remains is the church dedicated to Sant Celdoni and Sant Ermenter. This is a Byzantine style building dating from the 12th century, but records show that the Benedictine order built a house on this site in the 11th century.
The layout of the building is very particular, as it has an almost square nave with a central apse and two laterals that form the transept and façade. In the area of the central apse, there is also a raised sanctuary with a crypt below that has three naves and twelve pillars with Byzantine-style capitals.
The exterior of the church is almost completely hidden by the different structures that were added in later periods.
It is believed that the bodies of Saint Celdoni and Saint Ermenter are buried at Cellers. Two modern sculptures of these saints preside over the main altar. |
