Those who like Romanesque art will enjoy this original, small 11th century church, which is located on the outskirts of Cervera, heading south-west, and is next to the river Ondara on the road to Vallfogona de Riucorb (L-214). This is a very valuable building as it is one of the best examples of the Romanesque rotunda to be found in Catalonia.
The wall that surrounds the base of the building is sufficiently thick and strong to allow an internal stairway that leads up to the roof of the building, in the centre of which there is a small belfry. The nave of the church forms an almost perfect circle, which is only broken by the apse on its East side. The main door, with its semi-circular arch sections, is offset with respect to the central axis of the church and opens towards the west.
The internal decoration is very austere and has suffered numerous modifications. The exterior appearance of the church has remained practically unchanged. |
