CATHEDRAL OF SOLSONA
Photographic archive   Other churches

The three apses and belfry remain from the original Romanesque style temple that was consecrated in 1163. The modern-day cathedral is Gothic in style and work on it began in 1299 and was completed in 1630. The congregation is situated to the left of the transept, where there is a Baroque-style altarpiece dedicated to the Mare de Déu (Mother of God) de la Mercè and to the right, there is the Cloister chapel, where cult is rendered to the image of the Mare de Déu del Claustre, the patron saint of the city. This is a stone statue dating from the end of the 12th century and has been catalogued as one of the most important of all Romanesque period sculptures.
